Bromley AEGON beat Woodford Wells 5-1

Last Sunday saw Bromley
LTC’s AEGON Team Tennis squad contest their first away match of the season
against The Woodford Wells Club in Essex.

Newly promoted to the
National Division this year, Woodford Wells boasted a good line-up of players
and Bromley were taking nothing for granted.

Playing at No.1 for Bromley
this week was team stalwart Rob Searle who was up against Woodford Wells’
Richard Wire, a former highly ranked British Player. Unfortunately Rob lost
this match in two straight sets 6-3, 6-3.

Bromley’s new boy Harry
Skinner was at No.2 against Saad Abbas and outplayed his opponent to win 6-1,
6-0.

Making a return to the
Bromley line-up after a number of years was Barry Fulcher. Playing at No.3 and
showing he had lost none of his talents when up against Matt Porter, one of his
own coaching pupils, Fulcher came through to win 6-0, 6-2.

Team Captain Nick Cavaday
completed the Bromley side at No.4 and eased through his match against Woodford
Wells’ Tom Askell 6-1, 6-1.

Bromley were 3-1 up after
the singles rubbers and only required to win one of the doubles matches to
secure overall victory.

Fulcher and Searle paired up
to take on Wire and Askell whilst Skinner and Cavaday were up against Abbas and
Porter. The text book finish didn’t go to plan with the Woodford Wells boys
really upping their games and both Bromley pairs found themselves a set down. A
tie-break shoot out to decide the overall fixture was looking to be a
possibility but the Bromley boys dug deep, upped their own games and both pairs
won their respective second sets.

At one-set all, both rubbers
would be decided on a match tie-break (the first to ten points – clear by 2).
The experience and commitment of the Bromley team proved too much for Woodford
Wells with Fulcher and Searle coming through to win 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-8) and
Skinner and Cavaday won 3-6, 6-2 1-0 (10-3).

Bromley secure overall
victory winning 5-1.

The 2013 AEGON Team Tennis
campaign continues with a home tie against Sutton Tennis & Squash Club’s 2nd
team on Sunday 28th April. Play starts at 12pm.
