Bromley Finish 5th at AEGON Team Tennis Finals

Having
qualified once again for the 2012 AEGON Team Tennis Finals at The West Hants
Club, the Bromley team travelled to Bournemouth
last weekend to try to regain their National Crown.

Three-time
previous winners Bromley LTC were seeded 2 before the draw was made, much to
the surprise of the Bromley contingent. Whilst the
Kent side were hoping for a relatively easier match in the first round against the
likes of Holcombe Brook, Wrexham TC,
Loughborough University or even The West Hants
Club, the draw couldn’t have gone worse for the
Kent side and were drawn to play
Sutton T & SC in the first round on the Friday. Having already lost to
Sutton in the South East Group stages, the team knew this would be a tough call.

Spearheading
Bromley’s campaign was Kent No 1 Sean Thornley, who was up against Sutton’s
Neil Pauffley in the first singles rubber. After a close first set which the
Sutton player won 9-7 in the tie-breaker, Thornley eventually went down 6-7(7),
2-6.

The other
three rubbers didn’t go Bromley’s way either with Nick Cavaday losing to Josh
Jones 4-6, 3-6, Rob Searle losing to Andrew Bettles 4-6, 1-6 and Andrew
Richardson (previously unbeaten for the Bromley team) going down to Oliver
Hudson 2-6, 4-6.

With an
unassailable lead after the singles matches, Bromley lost to Sutton T & SC
4-0 (who ultimately made it to the Grand Final on Sunday having beaten
Paddington SC on the Saturday).

The Saturday
matches were to determine the 5
th to 8th places in the draw
and Bromley were up against Wrexham TC who had lost to Paddington the day
before.

Dominic
Ross-Hurst was playing at No 1 for Bromley and edged out Wrexham’s Rogan
Egerton 6-1, 6-2.

Team
Captain Nick Cavaday was not as successful against Alan Bevan, losing in
straight sets 3-6, 3-6.

Team stalwart
Rob Searle came through his singles to beat Simon Morris 6-4, 6-2 and Andrew
Richardson returned to his winning ways beating Steven Billington 7-6(5), 6-4.

After the
singles matches Bromley were 3-1 ahead and only needed to win one of the
doubles rubbers to secure overall victory.

Richardson
& Searle paired up to take on Wrexham’s Alan Bevan and Craig Evans in what
can only be described as a doubles master-class. The Bromley pair were far too
strong for the Welsh side and came through to win 6-1, 6-2.

Bromley won
4-1 and secured 5
th place in the finals. Captain Cavaday was
encouraged by his team’s performance. “From an entry of over 3,000 teams in the
competition, finishing 5
th after what was an injury ridden and difficult
season is a remarkable achievement for the players and the club. Hopefully we
can build on our success although the team has lost several sponsors over the
last couple of years and these will need to be replaced to ensure the future of
the side”.

The 2012 National
Champions this year were defending title holders
David Lloyd
Raynes Park,
beating Sutton T & SC in the final on Sunday 4-2.
