Bromley LTC beat Letchworth TC

Having had
their previous tie rained off, the former three time AEGON National Team Tennis
Champions were back in action at Letchworth Tennis Club in Hertfordshire over
the weekend.

Before the
match team captain Nick Cavaday was mindful of his Letchworth opponents. “This
is the toughest team competition in British Tennis and Letchworth TC won
promotion last year to the South East National Division. We certainly won’t be
taking anything for granted today”.

Playing at
number one in the Bromley line-up was former British top 20 player and
long-term squad member Rob Searle. Up against Letchworth’s James Thomas, Searle
won through in three sets 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.

Making his
debut for the former champions at the weekend was new squad member Keelan
Oakley who is currently ranked 50 in the country. Competing against Guy Thomas
from Letchworth, Oakley overcame his opponent in two sets winning 6-2, 6-4.

Up next for
Bromley was
Britain’s former
No 3,
Wimbledon and Davis Cup player Andrew
Richardson, who quickly despatched his young opponent of Philip Clay 6-1, 6-1.

Bringing up
the rear at no 4 in the team line-up was Bromley’s new Head Coach Davor
Baretic. He was also making his team debut for the side and overcame his
opponent of Ben Wilsher 7-5, 6-0.

Having won
all the four singles matches Bromley’s victory was secure and the team could go
into the two doubles rubbers in a more relaxed state.

Searle and
Oakley paired up to take on the Thomas brothers but their winning ways didn’t continue
as they narrowly lost to the Letchworth pair in two very tight sets 5-7,
6-7(4).

Richardson
and Baretic were up against Wilsher and Clay but the experience of the Bromley
pair proved too great for their young opponents and came through to win 6-3,
6-2.

Bromley won
the tie 5-1.

Captain
Cavaday was pleased with his team’s performance but was also mindful that there
was a long way to go. “With a match in hand we are currently 4
th or
5
th in the group standings with four matches to play. We will meet three
of the toughest sides in the whole competition over the next six weeks and our
initial aim is to qualify for the National Finals at
Bournemouth in July”.

Bromley’s
next match is away to Virgin Surrey on Sunday 20
th May.
