Bromley AEGON Team off to a good start

The 2012
AEGON Team Tennis competition commenced last Sunday with Bromley Lawn Tennis
Club hosting a home tie against Ipswich Sports Club.

With over
5,000 teams taking part across the country, the AEGON team competition is the
tennis equivalent of the football Premier League. National Champions in 2010,
2009, 2005 and Runners Up in 2011, the Bromley side were looking to avenge
their defeat against
Ipswich last year.

Cavaday, Bromley’s newly appointed team captain, was taking nothing for granted
going into his first match in charge. “Any team competing in the National
Division of this competition are going to be very tough opponents and we have
to remember that Ipswich finished top in the South East Divisional Group last
year, beating us and
Lloyd Raynes
Park – last year’s
National Champions – along the way”.

“We have
several new squad members competing for Bromley this year, two of whom are
making their debut today. It will be interesting to see how they play against
such tough opposition”.

Playing at
No.1 in Bromley’s line-up was new squad member Dominic Ross-Hurst. Currently
ranked at 40 in the country, Dom was up against Nick Crawley from
Ipswich but dropped the first set 7-5, eventually battling through to win the match 5-7, 6-1, 6-4.

Long term
squad member Rob Searle was Bromley’s No.2 on the day, his first match for the
side in twenty months following a horrific leg and ankle injury that almost
ruined his tennis career. In another tight three set match, Searle eventually
overcame Daniel Wynne from
Ipswich 6-1,
6-7(5), 6-0.

newbie at No.3 in the Bromley line-up was Marc Beckles. Currently ranked 61 in
the country, Beckles went down in two straight sets to Myles Orton 6-4, 6-4.

Richardson, Britain’s former No.3 and ex-Wimbledon and Davis Cup player,
bolstered Bromley’s chances in the tie by dispatching his opponent of Matt
Kirby 6-1, 6-4.

After the
singles matches Bromley went into the two doubles rubbers 3-1 ahead and needed
to win just one of the matches to secure overall victory.

and Beckles paired up to take on Crawley and Wynne from
Ipswich whilst Richardson and Searle were up against Orton and Kirby.

experience of Richardson/Searle proved too much for the
Suffolk youngsters with Bromley winning the
rubber 6-1, 6-2. Overall victory was secured and the loss by Ross-Hurst/Beckles
in their doubles match 6-2, 7-5 was disappointing but made no difference to the
overall outcome.

Bromley won
the tie 4-2.

after the match captain Cavaday was heartened by his side’s performance. “The
team played well today and it is always great to start the season on a winning
note. We are up against six other very tough sides over the next few months and
our aim is to qualify for the National Finals in
Bournemouth in July”.
